The goal is to ensure that behavior analysts are remaining in contact with the literature and discovering new and exciting research in behavior analysis! In this edition, Dr. Shane T. Spiker discusses the articles features in Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, 56(1) and briefly summarizes each for your listening pleasure.

Context matters. In the case of problem solving and collaborating, we need an incredible amount of information to make the most contextually appropriate decision with the folks we serve. In order to do that, we need to be able to objective evaluate barriers and concerns. If we are able to analyze these circumstances well, we can more readily create action items that directly impact the people in our care. In this talk, Dr. Shane T. Spiker discussed the development and implementation of the Contextual Variable Analysis and Planning Tool (CVAPT), a tool used to help analysts identify relevant variables and collaborate to problem solve effectively.

Further, this creates credential problems and can result in ethical sanctions or violations for both the RBT and the BCBA. These concerns are preventable as long as you’ve got the right information and support in place. In this discussion, Dr. Shane T. Spiker and Hana Call share some tips, tricks, and guidance to ensure that RBTs are able to adequately address their supervision needs in practice.

Ethics codes are necessary for a profession to establish guidelines and principles of professional practice. They are often established as a means to create guardrails for ethical practice as well as establish a means to hold practitioners and certificants accountable for their professional behavior. While RBTs are not responsible for adhering to the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts, they have their own code that they are responsible for. In this talk, Dr. Shane T. Spiker will briefly review the current code as it applies to RBT professional behavior.

RBTs handle a tremendous amount of work on a day to day basis. Some days are easier than others, but sometimes our days can be quite disorganized. In this talk, Dr. Shane T. Spiker offers some tips and tricks on how to successfully prepare for a session that builds rapport, honors assent, and establishes effective practices as an RBT working in the field.

This training is designed to equip parents and caregivers receiving behavior analysis services with practical, foundational safety skills that support child wellbeing across home and community settings. Emphasis is placed on proactive strategies rooted in applied behavior analysis, including prevention of common hazards, identification of high-risk situations, and early response to safety concerns. Participants will learn how to practice essential safety behaviors that will maintain their own safety as well as the safety of their loved ones. The training also addresses environmental arrangement, supervision strategies, and data-informed decision making to promote consistency and generalization of safety skills. Through examples, discussion, and applied practice, parents will gain confidence in implementing evidence-based safety procedures while collaborating effectively with behavior analysts. This training supports ethical, family-centered service delivery and empowers caregivers to actively participate in promoting safe, functional behavior in everyday routines.

Professionalism is a common point of contention among many professionals. Given the oblique nature of what qualifies as professional or not, it stands to reason that confusion is likely to occur. So that begs the question…what does professionalism even mean? In this discussion, Dr. Shane T. Spiker will break down what professionalism means for RBTs, some examples and non-examples of what is considered professional (generally speaking), and our ethical obligation as professionals to ensure we are meeting the highest standard of practice possible.

Behavior analysis is a maturing field that is experiencing a unique confluence of systems at the time of this presentation. With political maneuvering having direct impacts on funding, accrediting bodies working to improve quality services, and the BACB setting foundational standards of practice, working in behavior analysis can be somewhat confusing. Add to this the complexities related to SUPERVISION, and it's no wonder behavior analysts, supervisees, and trainees are experiencing higher than average stress. How do we make recommendations? Despite all of our clinical prowess, a collection of variables tip the scales in sometimes unpredictable ways. Behavior analyst are expected to take each of these unique variables into account and get their “dosage” of behavior analysis services exactly right. What if we don’t get enough hours? Sometimes, it appears that we are implementing programs just to “tick a box.” Interventions like noncontingent or task revisions might seem like simple things, but they have an incredible impact on learning. It is easy to underestimate the impact of good, well designed and selected antecedent interventions within behavior analytic work. If done well and implemented consistently, antecedent interventions can work to prevent crisis down the line. In this discussion, Dr. Shane T. Spiker will focus on defining and describing features of antecedent interventions and how they can be more effective based on principles of behavior.
