However, often analysts and RBTS find themselves in situations where they feel there is a lack of collaboration and communication. In addition, analysts and RBTs feel pressures from the families we serve advocating, to ending up more as an advocate during contentious situations. This talk will present discussions from both a BCBA school expert along with former district level school administrators on some of the pitfalls BCBA/RBTs engage in along with solutions on how to build positive relationships that both schools and families appreciate.

Experiences of Filipina Mothers Raising Children with Developmental Disabilities in Canada

The purpose of this study was to know and understand the experiences of Filipina mothers adapting to Canadian values system in raising children with developmental disabilities. The study explored the experience of acculturation of immigrant mothers in Canada and how their parenting practices are influenced by Canadian culture. This study can help to identify the ways of Filipina families parenting their child according to their parenting practices and child-rearing patterns they learned from the past or the new host country, Canada. Though research literature is abundant about Asian parenting practices in raising children with disabilities, there is a lack of clarity and focus on the Filipina mothers' experiencing on adapting parenting practices with children with disabilities in Canada. The research question in this study is What are the experiences of first-generation Filipina mothers’ adapting to Canadian values system while raising the children with developmental disabilities? This study used generic qualitative methodology and purposive and snowball sampling to recruit 10 participants. The 10 participants were all first-generation Filipina immigrant women, living in Canada with children with developmental disabilities. Data was acquired using semi-structured interview and analyzed using thematic analysis with constant comparison (CC) by using Percy, Kostere, and Kostere’s 2015 article. Six themes emerged: maternal responsibilities, maternal challenges, parenting practices, parenting style, benefits of migration, and challenges of migration. The children with developmental disabilities while adapting to the Canadian values system. Results illustrate how Filipina parenting practices, beliefs, and style in raising their children may be shaped in the context of the rate of acculturation and longevity of residency in the host country. It is indicated that more cultural and parenting studies.
